Why we’ve got BBC video on the site

The more astute amongst you will have notice that there’s an influx of BBC video on the site, embedded in stories. Such as here and here  Influx is probably a strong word – dribble would perhaps suit better – but it’s a small and significant step.

In truth, it’s probably more of a significant step for the BBC than for us. They are, effectively, setting up new syndication agreements, with ourselves The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and the Daily Mail. Under the agreement we’ve signed, we can take news content in four areas: politics, business, health and science. For us, it’s an extension to agreements for news video that we already have with the Press Association, Al Jazeera, and France 24, but it’s a very welcome one.

For the BBC, it's a small change in philosophy, as Deputy Director General, Mark Byford, said:

“The BBC set out its intention to open up access to BBC news content as part of the Digital Britain process. We regard this initiative as a core part of the BBC working more effectively as a public service partner, with other media organisations utilising BBC news content.”

We just think it’s a neat way of getting more toys on the site.

Is this wise?

The phrase 'Trojan Horse' comes to mind

Not sure why, as I say below, it's something we control. They won't be taking control of our news videos any time since we need to have ads attached and that's not something the BBC can do in the UK right now.
Hmmm

Jimmy, how are you doing this? Is it just an editorial decision, on a per-story basis, which videos to embed on stories? Or is there some other technical gubbins going on involving XML feeds and some like?

It's largely an editorial decision. There's no gubbins going on, as we need to control the embedding of external sources. We can't add a feed off the BBC to our main carousel (if we wanted to, which I never got to worrying about) because there's ads attached to that player. It's quite a limited step - limited by what the BBC produce, whether its relevant to what we've got and by how well our day is going that we've got time to add these things.

As I say, it's a more significant step for the Beeb
ITN and PA view

So, no comment on the ITN and PA view, that it is the BBC using licence fee revenue to dump content for free, and attempt to put them out of business?

Seems like they have a point from what has been said.

Sorry for the tardy response.

I'm not sure I do agree. As I said, we use PA and others and we had conversations with ITN. We tend to find that they cover different things and much prefer having two. This will have no effect on the deals we make with other third parties.
As a small business, how do i go about it?

Hi

There is a snip from a BBC show that I desperately need for my website, as part of a safety display. Can you let me know how I would go about this? Thanks

if it has an embed code in the 'share' option, I'd say go for it. It's a one-off presumably. Just don't say I said so.

It sounds commendable but let us discuss the title of this newspaper and its founding ethos, the "Independent" which in my view becomes seriously marginalised when it comes to objective reporting, by allowing the heavily leaned on by the government BBC to present your video news, the question has to be asked, is the Independent going to remain... independent?

You see, last year Mark Thompson sent one of his senior men to Israel, where a secret deal was struck that the BBC would tone down to non-existance any criticism of Israel in its news services in return for a market share of broadcasting within Israel, this is not a good place because we have now a situation where the BBC's journalistic impartiality is compromised and this will be replicated, syndicated across the various news outlets, so in the end, the Independent will without realising it, be emasculated in its objective reporting.

Or will the Independent be running conflicting news, where the BBC is following the government set line and the newspaper tries to follow what it says is its "independence", I would say that would look rather odd with two versions of the same event covered in a majorly different manner.

And that is just one example why this is not a good idea, there are other ranging reasons too including that all BBC supervisors or higher are appointed only with the approval of the security services which equates to government control and approval, that since Blair took control and was humiliated by the BBC, sought to neuter much of what the BBC stood for, in short, the government has exerted a greater control onto the BBC than is desireable.

So in the end, we will see a chain of altered news, for that I am sad because I liked this paper, hell my late mother helped get it going way back in the mists of time and we knew such people as Robert Fisk back when she worked with Philip Howard over at Grays Inn Rd before the Murdoch debacle, so maybe the name of the newspaper should become "The Syndicater" or the "Replicator" for I would have thought in this easy technological age, it would have been far better to do the work in house than buy the lies of the BBC.

Well, believe what you like about MArk Thompson's trip to Israel, but the BBC's input into this site is tiny. A smattering of videos, and that's it. Far few than the ones provided by PA, Al Jazeera, France 24 and others. In video terms, there is an element of aggregation but we will continue to look for a variety of choices. And Fisk is still here.
